Chapter 1 Behind the Gym

1. Why was Jill Pole crying behind the gym?

Jill Pole was crying because she has been bullied by the school bullies.

2. Why were they allowed to bully the smaller children?

Because the Experiment House’s head thinks boys and girls shouldn’t be bothered about doing whatever they want to do. This led some of the big and strong kids starting to bully other kids. However, the head of the school was a crazy follower of psychology and he thinks bullying is a curious phenomenon and didn’t punish them.

3. What was Eustace like last term? How was he different this term?

He sucked up to the bullies, and currying favors, and be dancing attendance on them. According to himself, he acted like a little tic.

4. Why had Eustace changed?

After visiting Narnia with his two cousins (Pevensie Kids Edmond and Lucy) and experiencing many things on the Dawn Treader, he becomes nice.

5. What did the curious teaching methods at Experiment House allow the students to learn?

The weird teaching Method led the students to learn how to run away quickly and quietly when the bullies were looking for them.

6. What did Eustace and Jill see when they opened the door?

They saw bright sun lights, which were bright enough to glitter the dewdrops, Jill’s tear trace, and beautiful birds flying in the clear sky.

7. What did Jill see when she looked down from the precipice? How did it affect her?

Jill saw the clouds under where she was standing. She saw the deepest cliff she had ever seen before. Jill suddenly got scared and wasn’t able to move her legs.

Reflection

I have already read this book many times since I was 11. When I was first reading this book, I fell in love with the book’s story. However, bypassing 9years of dynamic life, now I feel the story differently from the first time. I was trying to analyze and figured out what kind of Teaching Method that the Experiment House head was using and what is the pros and cons of that method. Maybe I am too used to studying as a EE student.

The interesting part of this chapter starts when the magic happens. And this magic introduced to the reader so quickly and unexpectedly it made the magic more magical. This magic makes us wonder about when and how this magic happened. Did it happen from the first meeting of Jill and Eustace? Or it happened when they asked for help from Aslan? Then why Aslan wasn’t there at the entrance of the door? Or maybe Aslan didn’t open the gate between the two worlds. We still have many questions, and the only way to find out is by reading the book.
